By: JM. But in order to take the pictures, I need to have the correct gear so I ask myself four basic questions before any trip:
1. “Where are we going?”
2. “How are we getting there?”
3. “What’s the purpose of the trip?”
4. “What will I pack?”
Where are we going? In this particular case we are headed for a R & R trip down to St. Augustine, Florida for a spring break and some beach time. We’ll be gone for a week in total.
How are we getting there? We will be driving my Toyota van in lieu of flying. I have the van pretty much setup as my photography platform with chargers and dongles for cameras, phones, dash cams, and drone. Nothing is left to chance.
What’s the purpose of this trip? This will be a “short” 1300 mile (one-way) trip in order to test several things ahead of our longer journey later this summer. We want to be sure that the gear works as expected and there is no better way to test it.
So what am I packing? My Fujifilm 50r and a total of four lenses, including an old(er) 58mm 1.4 Minolta lens left over from my Minolta camera days going back to 1978. I will also be packing a spare camera body just in case one body fails.
Charging ports, cables, and adapters will be installed and tested in the van to test the electronics for accessibility and convenience.
On this short spring trip, I will also be working on nailing down my iPad workflow and getting any last kinks worked out as we do not plan on taking a laptop with us on this vacation, nor any future ones this summer. Even though we had the iPad with us last summer when in Colorado, we also had my Macbook Air and that was the primary machine for uploading/editing/emailing images. The iPad was used for movies, and the occasional email and social media uploads. On this trip, I will be working with the iPad Pro exclusively plus my Satechi adapter for uploading my camera and drone SD cards; an external 1TB SSD Samsung T5 drive as my iPad Pro even with 512GB of storage needs some additional help in the storage area, plus two older, and larger (see photos) 1TB LaCie Rugged drives. I’ll be testing the Lacie drives during this week long trip in order to make sure they function properly; they are older drives that have not been used in quite a few years. I will also be testing and checking all my cables and connectors, and the cases the gear will be transported in. The images here show the cables, external drives and other components and the bags they will be traveling in.
