Beautiful Maine!

Hello, I have been here in Maine for several days now. I’ve been working out kinks in the way I manage my images with my new M2 laptop, Lightroom, and external drives. A couple of years ago when we traveled up to Alaska I only took my iPad. After I returned I said, and still stand by my statement that unless the trip is a weekend or something short I will never try and use my iPad Pro for travel. Honestly, it seems like a great idea, and at the time I read about the experiences so many other photographers had; and initially my experience was “ok” but as I got deeper into our trip, and had so many huge image files — remember: I shoot with the Fuji medium format 50r and 100s. So we are looking at about 200mb per click as I shoot in JPEG fine + Lossless Raw. On that trip I actually deleted the JPEG’s and just kept the raw files due to space constraints on my external SSD’s. Long story short, using a laptop, though a tad more cumbersome is just better for me.

Not only is file management easier, but I can do some edits with my Capture One Pro, which on the iPad is an extra charge unlike Lightroom mobile, plus I can keyword my images as well! Once I get home I can just export the catalog and import it into my iMac.

So far on this “test” trip the laptop has worked out extremely well. I have the Apple M2, 13.6″ MacBook Air, with 512gb internal SSD and maxed out at 24gb of Ram. With this configuration I have been able to complete focus stacks of up to ten 100s raw files in no time at all with no hiccups, or any other issues. Can’t do that on the iPad. Being able to edit on the road in my opinion makes the trip much more fun and enjoyable, and it certainly helps save time when back home as I can do some culling, and editing during downtime on the road.

The first image, Southwest Harbor at sunset is a four image focus stack that would not have been possible to finish until I got back home had I been using the iPad Pro. Now, don’t get me wrong! The iPad is an amazing tool, just not for my personal use.

The second image is a Magic Air 2s image of the Quoddy Lighthouse located at the most eastern point in the continental United States. Basic DNG drone file processed in LR, and Capture One.
