Unpacking the Overpacking

by: JM

So I returned from my short, four day road trip to the Maine coast. As you will see in the below image I waaaay overpacked. But, in my defense I will say that I was testing several different load-outs, and bags and their configuration for our upcoming long-term summer trip back to Alaska, British Columba, and the Northwest. Since we’ll be gone about six-eight weeks I need to be sure I pack what I need and no more. Since I have most of the gear on our guest room bed I’m going to start reviewing what worked, and what did not, and what I did not use. Missing from this image is my GF32-64 F4 zoom which I think I left in the truck. So I need to go find that like real soon as it’s getting hot out there. Also not shown here is my DJI A2s drone, controller, and four batteries. Those are also sitting in my van and I need to get them out.

Since this upcoming trip will include what I hope to be some rich wildlife shooting opportunities – Think Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, BC, and Alaska (again) as was the case in the time we spent in the Rockies a few years ago, plus Alaska in 2022 AND photographing whales and puffins in Newfoundland last summer, I’m taking the new Fuji X 100-400mm lens I bought on eBay a few months ago. I wish I had the 100-400 when I was photographing the whales and puffins as that would have been amazing! I’m also throwing my 50-140 2.8 in the bag as well to use with my X-H1..As far as the GFX gear, I’m am leaving my 50r body at home and only taking the 100s plus the GF20-35, 32-64, and the 100-200 lenses plus the 50mm which is an amazing tool especially for shooting panos! I’m actually trying to now sell my GF 30mm 3.5 and my GF45mm 2.8 as I haven’t used them in quite some time. I’m also taking a separate “point & shoot” style camera which is on its way to me and will arrive tomorrow. Looking forward to testing and ultimately taking it on our roadtrip.

As I pack the bags, I’ll post what will ultimately make it back onto the road and into the field. I need to be reasonable as on this trip my spouse will be joining me as has been our summer tradition since I officially retired in 2021 (she’s a teacher and is off summers) so I need to make room for other stuff she insists on packing – like clothing, makeup, some snacks, cooler, etc., etc. UGH!

More to come
